Local Wineries
We don’t have the same volume of wineries that you might find in the Barossa or McLaren Vale, but what we have is absolutely first-rate and makes for a great long lunch. I’m going to keep things brief and focus on the two that we go back to time and time again..
Lazy lunch at Crooked River Wines
Crooked River Wines is on the outskirts of Gerringong, accessible by train (with a bit of legwork). The views over the valley are stunning on a sunny day. And the kitchen and wines aren’t bad either. Be sure to book in advance. You can either eat a la carte in the restaurant, or go for the bar menu and a seat on the terrace. The vineyard itself is a moderately unpleasant 10-15 minute walk from Gerringong railway station (see timetable). If you’re driving, there’s plenty of parking. Alternatively, there is a small but increasing number of Uber drivers now operating locally. Expect to pay $25-30 each way.
Pizza and Fizz at Mountain Ridge Wines
Slightly further afield is the Mountain Ridge winery. A less formal arrangement with a pizza oven, lovely staff and order-at-the-bar style service. Outdoor tables have the view - book in advance. Go for a 4-wine tasting paddle and make sure you include the bubbles.
